A Study on the Contents and Time of Health Education in the 7th curriculum at the Elementary Schools

Abstract
Purpose : This study is to analyze the contents and time of health education centered on the textbooks in the 7th curriculum at the elementary school.

Method : This study investigated it as an object of 129 state books for the children in 1~6 grade and 76 guide books for the teachers used in the present curriculum from Mar. 1, 2002 to Feb. 28, 2003. The collected data were analyzed through the frequency, percentage, and the list of contents system. From the result of this research above, it may be summed up as follows.

Result : 1) The contents of health education in the 7th curriculum at the elementary schools were inserted and dispersed in 9 subject matters among 13 subject matters. The units related to the health education were total 107 units. The physical subject matter took most by the subject matter. 2) As for the contents of health education by the grade, it educated 'Safety and first-aid' in the first grade, 'Physical structur e?function?growth' in the second and sixth grade, 'Daily healthy life', 'Family life and Social health' in the fourth grade, and 'Nutrition' in the fifth grade as main contents. But, it was lack of continuity and hierarchy of curriculum among each grade, and it was considered as it was short of integrity. 3) The contents of health education by the field were composed of the fields of 'Community and environmental health', 'Safety and First-aid' from the first grade to the sixth grade most centrally. But, it was not composed of the fields of 'Health concept' and 'Mental health' a little. But, it presented the disparity and the shortage phenomenon in the contents of health education. 4) The hours of educational education in the 7th curriculum at the elementary schools were total 248 hours, average 41.3 hours by the grade, 1.2 hours per a week. The hours of health education by the subject matter took the physical subject matter most.

Conclusion : It presented the disparity and the shortage phenomenon in the contents of health education and it considered that it was lack of integrity.
